Our environment and our world

Shah Israt Ajmeri

The environment revolves around its own natural order. Therefore, the negative impact on the environment is constantly dragging the world towards destruction. The main goal of getting rid of this negative impact on the environment is to raise awareness and value the environment. The degradation of the environment can be eliminated only through awareness and values. Therefore, in the era of globalization, everyone should be concerned about the environment.

Since ancient times, human beings have sometimes fought against the hostile environment for their survival and sometimes by exploiting the environment to create human civilization. Therefore, ancient civilizations have developed around all the river basins of the world. In its context, it has reached the present state through various changes and evolutions for hundreds of ages. Over the course of time, humans have built their habitats through various activities in a vast area of the world in the midst of natural diversity. Man has created his natural, social, and economic environment by conquering nature. Therefore, the environment and mankind are inseparable parts of each other. The industrial revolution has brought a radical change; cities and ports have been built around this industry. Increasing population concentration and industrial expansion in urban centers. At the same time, the consumption of natural resources is increasing at a rapid rate. But the environment in today's world is facing a critical situation only as a result of its overuse. Deforestation, river filling, construction of infrastructure, industrial plants, and settlements are being done to meet the growing population and demand. As a result, the environment is losing its natural state and form. Along with meeting needs, when the environment is used in socioeconomic areas, the most affected are weather, climate, land, and biodiversity.

As a result of science and technology, various improvements are being made, and we are making the world a modern one whose horrors are huge. As a result, climate change, biodiversity destruction, environmental pollution, and various socio-social problems and crises are emerging. The world today is threatened by climate change. Every year, we are hit by various man-made and natural calamities. As a result of these calamities, people's lives are becoming miserable. Which results in endless suffering. Disasters are taking people's lives. The environment and biodiversity are being destroyed. Bangladesh is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. Different types of natural disasters occur due to geographic location and other factors. Various natural calamities like floods, cyclones, droughts, river bursts, floods, and earthquakes are damaging the economic, social, and environmental conditions almost every year. As a result, financial conditions deteriorate, and health risks are noticeable. The impact on children, women, the poor, and people in coastal areas is clearly present.

The effects of climate change are increasing at a rapid rate. A report by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change states that unless concrete steps are taken to curb current levels of carbon emissions, global warming will exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius between 2030 and 2052, which is not desirable for us.

It is very important to formulate and implement specific policies in Bangladesh to overcome problems like environmental degradation and natural disasters through the fair distribution of resources and the control of more pressure on the environment. Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be possible through the active role of government, private, and international organizations. In this context, it is essential to work collectively from the state level to the local level to achieve sustainable development goals in Bangladesh. In order to achieve the UN's 17 SDG (2030) targets, everyone needs to be informed.

Building a suitable habitat for future generations and securing sufficient resources is only possible through moderate and sustainable use of the environment. It is through skills, experience, and vision that we can present to future generations a pollution-free, clean environment that is possible through individual, collective, national, and international initiatives, and based on which the present world must take action together to meet the SDGs.
